In Brooklyn, Amanda Sandford, who works in marketing, rents a fancy house in Long Island to spend the weekend with her husband, the college teacher Clay Sandford, and their teenage children Archie Sandford and Rose Sandford. While shopping for groceries in the local market, Amanda sees a beard man arranging a great quantity of canned food and water in his truck. When the family goes to the beach, they need to flee since a huge oil tanker head and strand on the beach. Soon they find that their cell phones, televisions, electronic apparatuses, and Wi-Fi are not working. During the night, a man who claims to be the owner of the house G. H. Scott and his arrogant daughter Ruth Scott ask for shelter since there was a blackout in New York City. The suspicious Amanda does not want, but Clay allows them to stay for the night.
